Acupuncture works great with women who are also using ART (assisted reproductive technology such as IUI and IVF). Whether used to prepare for IUI or IVF, or used just before or after transfer, acupuncture really does have a positive influence on the outcome.

Ideally, I like to have women give themselves three cycles to strengthen their bodies, and to bring about a state of balance. When bodies are strengthened, and harmonized, they are more receptive to IUI and IVF. The reason 3 cycles are ideal is because this is a period of time in which the body can naturally become balanced. With everything that comes along with ART, it is best to have the body in a state that can not only handle all the medications, the shots, the transfers, but also handle the emotional ups and downs (excitement, anticipation, anxiety) as well.

In Chinese medicine, stress and anxiety, or “Liver Qi Stagnation” can be detrimental to fertility because it causes a state of non-movement. If things are not moving or flowing properly, it might be difficult for a sperm to connect with the egg, or a fertilized embryo to find its way to the endometrium to embed itself. It is really important to maintain a healthy mind and stay as relaxed as possible during these times as it does influence the body. (Wait, what?! Exactly. How can one be as relaxed as possible when going through such an exciting, tender, yet very medical time?) The calmer we are, the calmer our bodies are. The more relaxed our bodies are, the more receptive they are.

However, when women are at a point of using IUI or IVF, time has been long spent trying to get pregnant and having a healthy, happy baby. I know time is of essence. Some women decide that at the point of using IUI or IVF, that is when they want to use acupuncture. Acupuncture can still assist at this point. Not only does acupuncture help keep us relaxed and calm, used at this point it will help relax the body and move qi in the uterus to help with implantation.

Women who have never had acupuncture before wonder if acupuncture can have negative side effects on the body. The answer is no. Acupuncture has a relaxing side effect if anything. In Western medicine, when acupuncture needles are inserted and punctured into the skin, which is a tiny injury, it is viewed as starting a healing cascade. Part of this process is the release of hormones that are triggered when the puncture occurs. These hormones, such as endorphins, help relax the body as well as alleviate pain. Acupuncture will not have a negative impact on your procedure.
