The basics to nourishing your fertility

Stay hydrated with plenty of clean water:

Because most of the body is made up of water, it is important to stay hydrated. Our bodies rely on water to function healthily.  Most people are in fact dehydrated so drinking plenty of water is important for fertility purposes. Not only does water help the body stay hydrated, it also helps to flush out toxins and waste that do not serve our bodies, and makes it easier for all organs to do their jobs properly.

Everyone metabolizes water differently. There was a standard of drinking 8-8oz cups of water, however some people simply cannot do that. Drink as much water as possible, up to 8-8oz of water, but if you cannot, do what you can. Drinking filtered, room temperature water is ideal, as is drinking it out of a non-plastic container such as glass or ceramic. Some plastic containers contain different chemicals that may leach into the water.

Eating clean, organic and whole foods:

By eating a “clean diet” and cutting out the junk, the body is able to receive and use more nutrients.  Because food can help and influence hormonal balance, it is important to include specific foods and to avoid others in order to increase fertility. It is especially important to eat organic, grass-fed, free range and cage free meat and poultry since many large farm meat and poultry companies contain added hormones and antibiotics. Many of the added hormones consist of estrogen. Because fertility relies on the delicate balance of hormones, it would be wise to avoid any extra intake of hormones which may then interfere with the body’s hormonal balance.

Just as organic meats should be eaten, so should fruits and vegetables. While an entire diet of organic foods may not come cheap, try to make as many smart choices as possible when choosing organic foods. Fruits and vegetables can absorb all the pesticides that were used on them in the growing process. Once consumed, our bodies will then also absorb these pesticides. Pesticides used on non-organic plants have shown to cause sterility in workers applying the pesticides, and in many countries the use of these pesticides has been banned altogether. These are not things that should be put in the body as they absolutely do not support fertility. When choosing to buy organic or non-organic, consider the dirty dozen and the clean fifteen lists.

The dirty dozen:

These are foods that should be bought organic whenever possible, as these are the foods that are considered to have higher concentrates of pesticides. (there are different dirty dozen lists out there, so use your best judgment. Fruits and veggies with thinner skin that we eat directly can naturally have higher pesticide rates as the protective layer is thinner):

  1. Apples
  2. Strawberries
  3. Grapes
  4. Celery
  5. Peaches
  6. Spinach ( also consider buying organic lettuce, kale and other greens )
  7. Sweet Bell Peppers
  8. Nectarines- imported
  9. Cucumbers
  10. Potatoes
  11. Cherry Tomatoes
  12. Hot Peppers

The clean fifteen:

These foods have been shown to have fewer pesticide contamination rates. These foods are safer to consume when buying non-organic:

  1. Sweet Corn
  2. Onions
  3. Pineapple
  4. Avocado
  5. Cabbage
  6. Sweet Peas- frozen
  7. Papaya
  8. Mangos
  9. Asparagus
  10. Eggplant
  11. Kiwi
  12. Grapefruit
  13. Cantaloupe
  14. Sweet Potato
  15. Mushrooms
